cocteau twins谈王菲 [转]
Simon
Raymonde Interview
January 2003
By Bruce Stringer
How did the Faye Wong link-up
happen?
We heard from Mercury that a big Asian rock star had covered some songs of ours, so we jsut asked them to try and get us copies. Then when we heard them we were actually quite impressed. Usually the Cocteau's covers bands don't quite get it, so it was a nice surprise, and instrumentally they even sounded like they had worked hard to get it right. On a whim we thought it might be cool to try and actually try to do something together, so we made a few polite enquiries. In the end we were not able to persuade the powers that be to invest in anything too exciting so we decided we would send her a couple of the forthcoming album tracks from "Milk & Kisses" and see if she fancied doing some more vocals for the Mercury Asian release. She did a grand job and what she did we used!
Had you heard of her before the initial contact?
Nah.. Too busy with our heads up our asses.
How was the material that Faye eventually sang on chosen/offered?
Hmm.. Let me see.. I think we chose the two with the least
harmonies, stuff that was simpler, so that it wouldn't be a problem to find room to do her thing.
Where were Faye's vocal tracks recorded?
I think Hong Kong although I could be wrong.
Did you actually work with Faye?
See above. I wanted to, we all did, certainly fancied a trip over there, but I guess we were still a bit of a risk at that point.
Could you describe what type of relationship (if any) Liz had with
Faye?
Well Faye certainly must have had some kind of fascination with Liz 'cause got it so bang on, you know, it was kind of spooky. I think Liz respected Faye and we liked her style. In the Asian pop market she seemed to stand out as having a good individualistic streak.
What did you think of Faye's Impatience album as a whole?
Quite like the Cocteau Twins wasn't it? I wasn't mad about it, but then I am not mad about anything that sounds like the Cocteau Twins, 'cause it seems that those bands are always the ones that sell the most!
Were there any other Cocteau Twins' songs that you know of that Faye recorded but never released?
Hmm, not sure. Robin and I wrote her a couple of songs after that, I think she only used one, but I don't know if she ever got around to recording on it at all..
Was there ever any plan to work on more material together?
I think when Liz left shortly afterwards, Robin and I wondered if we should go and live in Shanghai for a bit and be her backing band, eat lots of seafood, and sit around in expensive recording studios all day... But I think Faye had lost interest by then. Can't blame her really.
What did you think of Faye's live acoustic version of "Rilkean
Heart"?
I haven't heard that one! Is it good? Our acoustic version of it was blinding!
Is there anything that you could tell Faye's fans about her
personality - any anecdotes or interesting stories?
Man, I wish. These things always sound so much more interesting until you find out how boring the whole procedure was. We never met, never spoke, never exchanged emails. It was all done through Alvin Leong who was a great chap, but personally there was no interaction at all. Sorry to disappoint you all. I had hoped the collaboration would develop further, but the people with the money thought otherwise.
Simon, thank you very much for taking part in this Q & A, all the best!
