Dreaming of Dunlopillo

A GOOD night's sleep is priceless, by any measure.
Studies indicate the average person spends one third of his lifetime sleeping. Understanding this, Dunlopillo, backed by 78 years of research and development, is offering a new range of products to those who value a good night's sleep.
"We use Talalay latex that is imported from the United Kingdom and assembled in our Dunlopillo factories worldwide," said Dunlopillo (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd assistant sales manager Jason Chai.
As a manufacturer of mattresses and divans, and supplier of pillows, bolsters, bed linen and bed frames, Dunlopillo boasts an extensive distribution network in Asia, supported by manufacturing facilities in Vietnam, Indonesia, China, Hong Kong and the Middle East.
"Best of all, there's no need to `flip' our mattresses every three to six months, unlike most other mattresses you can find in the market ... a definite plus point for those who find turning a heavy mattress tiresome," said Chai.
In 2004, Sime Darby Bhd, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Dunlopillo (Malaysia), acquired the Dunlopillo trademark for 45 countries throughout the world - from Western countries stretching to the entire Asian region, including Japan and the African continent.
Dunlopillo today lays claim to being one of the world's "largest and most sophisticated latex manufacturing factories", one that places constant emphasis on the innovation of latex products. In fact, Dunlopillo has earned a reputation for being an internationally renowned top-selling mattress brand.
"In line with advances in technology, we have introduced the revolutionary 5-Zone Pocketed Spring System, offering varying degrees of firmness in one mattress through a combination of honeycomb and parallel spring coil arrangements to allow for additional support for the heavier parts of the body.
"For instance, the honeycomb arrangement is used to support the head, waist, legs as well as to ensure parallel support for the shoulder and hip areas to ensure that these `heavier' areas `sit' into the mattress, while allowing the lighter areas to rest on the mattress," Chai explained.
The result is excellent support for the entire body through eliminating pressure built up on the body, and ensuring optimal relaxation for the muscles. Keeping the spine in its natural alignment to minimise spinal stress is another feature of this mattress.
Out of 14 models of mattresses available, he said, a series of space-saving bedding products the likes of the foldaway mattress, storage bed and pull out bed make up for a dreamy combination.
Dunlopillo's wide range of bedding products under the UK Imported Talalay SP Latex series comes with hypo-allergenic property, which combats the growth of dust mites, while its antimicrobial quality stops the growth of bacterial, mould, mildew and fungus.
"Research from the Department of Microbiology in the University of Leeds (UK) confirmed that Dunlopillo's UK Talalay Latex is capable of killing 10 to the power of 10 bacterial cells.
"This will be beneficial to allergy sufferers and ideal for people who suffer from respiratory problems. It also provides independent support to the body by conforming to each individual's body contour and weight," Chai said, adding that the UK Talalay Latex is self-ventilating by virtue of its 250,000 inner-connecting air cells per cubic inch to allow air to flow freely.
"Besides the full Talalay Latex mattress, we also produce Individual Pocket Spring mattresses (IPS) that are barrel-shaped, with the diameter of the coil at both ends smaller than the centre.
"This is to prevent coil entanglement and to improve durability as it will eliminate damage done to the pockets caused by contact points between individual springs," he said.
All the spring units have been pre-compressed and hermetically sealed in non-woven pockets to prevent the springs from rusting. The detailed process of ensuring that the pocket springs are heat-glued in the middle to allow the springs to move independently to give individualised support to the entire body, while maintaining the spine in its natural alignment, is another attention to detail that sets Dunlopillo apart from its competitors.
"Effort is put in to consistently upgrade our products," said Chai, adding that this is in line with the company's tagline of helping its customers "sleep better".
"People buy our products because of our trusted brand name. Our product quality too is different as we use imported latex from the UK while maintaining strict quality control. This market is targeted at those in the middle- and upper-middle income brackets," he said.
There's certainly no limit to the power of the imagination as far as Dunlopillo is concerned. Judging from its I-Rock mattress launched at the end of last year, suffice to say that innovation lies at the heart of its R&D efforts. In this instance, this mattress comes with built-in speakers and a complete sound system.
"You can use an MP3 - or, if you like, just link an iPod to the speaker," he said, pointing out that this range is targeted at teenagers and young executives.
