New York 107, Denver 96
Guards Lead Charge For Knicks
Box Score | Knicks Home | Nuggets Home
NEW YORK, Dec. 12 (Ticker) -- The New York Knicks honored the all-time great guards from their past. Jamal Crawford and Stephon Marbury made a strong case for the present. Crawford and Marbury combined for 56 points as the Knicks snapped the Denver Nuggets' four-game winning streak with a 107-96 victory.
Crawford, who scored 17 of his 31 points in the third quarter, drained a 3-pointer 6:24 into the second half to give the Knicks their largest lead, 70-56. That basket capped a 17-8 run in which he scored 13 points.
Crawford, who has struggled at times from the field, has combined with Marbury to form the second-highest scoring duo in the NBA. After missing four of his first six shots, he made 9-of-15 in the second half, finishing 11-of-19 overall.
"I've been reminding him that he can get to any place that he wants to," Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "He's responded extremely well. He has the opportunity to score or pass the ball to someone. He knows that I have great confidence in him."
"My teammates did a great job finding me," said Crawford, who had shot 11-of-40 in his previous three games and made at least half his shots for the fourth time as a Knick. "My coach had some great plays. I was open and able to hit shots. Honestly, in moments like that, you just zone out."
Marbury scored 14 of his 25 points in the first half as the Knicks overcame an early eight-point deficit to open a 49-44 lead at the break.
Marbury also recorded 11 assists -- giving him 5,008 for his career -- as the Knicks improved to 7-2 when he reaches double figures in assists.
In addition to honoring great guards such as Walt Frazier, Earl Monroe, Dick Barnett and John Starks, the Knicks sported uniforms from the 1979-80 season.
Kurt Thomas grabbed a season-high 18 rebounds for the Knicks (10-10), who won for just the second time in their last six games and are at .500 for the sixth time this season. Thomas also combined with 6-10 Tim Thomas to hold Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony to just 7-of-23 shooting.
Guard Allan Houston -- who has put together an impressive resume of his own with the Knicks -- scored nine points in his home debut for the Knicks. After missing the first 16 games with a left knee injury, Houston made his season debut Friday in Washington and scored eight points in 19 minutes.
"He looked more comfortable tonight compared to the first game," Tim Thomas said. "I like the fact that he drove to the basket one time. It shows that he is almost getting there."
Houston, who entered to a warm reception from the sellout crowd at Madison Square Garden, also recorded two rebounds and three assists.
"I'm just excited," Houston said. "It's only going to get better."
Anthony scored 26 points on 12-of-16 foul shooting and former Knick Marcus Camby had 21 points and 14 rebounds for the Nuggets, who lost for only the second time in 10 games against Eastern Conference foes.
The Nuggets posted their second-worst defensive showing of the season, falling to 2-1 on a seven-game, 11-day road trip. They shot 45 percent (32-of-71) but committed 22 turnovers, including seven apiece by Anthony and point guard Andre Miller.
"I don't chalk it up to anything other than we got selfish and random," said Denver coach Jeff Bzdelik, whose team lost for just the third time in the last 13 contests. "And we weren't running and moving on offense."
