James Leads Raptors to Fifth Straight Win



The Raptors won their fifth straight 112-92 over Houston Friday. Mike James had 30 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. The Raptors host New Jersey Sunday




TORONTO (CP) -- Playing against the team that traded him away, Toronto guard Mike James didn't need any extra motivation. He got some anyway.

Spurred on by a mid-game scuffle with former teammate Juwan Howard, James led the Raptors with 30 points and eight assists as Toronto beat the Houston Rockets 112-92 on Friday.

Chris Bosh added 22 points and 16 rebounds for the Raptors (11-22), who posted their fifth consecutive victory. It's Toronto's longest winning streak since a five-game run from December 2-9, 2003.

Houston's Tracy McGrady led all scorers with 37 points, his fifth consecutive 30-point effort.

Howard was ejected after shoving James in the face with the ball in the second quarter.

``It shocked me that it went that far, but that's part of the game, you've got to be prepared for that,'' James said. ``If you put your hand on the stove, you've got to be prepared to get burned.''

James, who had to be restrained from going after Howard, said the melee sharpened his focus.

``That kind of woke him up a little bit,'' agreed coach Sam Mitchell. ``Whatever it released in him, I can take seeing about another 50 games of it.''

Both players were assessed technical fouls and Howard was escorted back to the locker room by a security guard. Howard refused to comment after the game.

Morris Peterson scored 19 and Charlie Villanueva added 21 for the Raptors, including a seven-point run to start the fourth quarter that put Toronto ahead 84-67.

Fifteen of Villanueva's points came in the final quarter as the Raptors won their third straight home game in front of 17,460 at the Air Canada Centre.

``In the first half he just couldn't get it going and then in the second half he just found his rhythm,'' said Mitchell.

Five of the seven Raptors who scored reached double figures.

``We do well when we share the ball,'' Bosh said. ``When we share the ball, everybody plays good team defence.''

Rafer Alston, traded from Toronto to Houston in exchange for James during training camp, scored just two points in 34 minutes.

After ripping Mitchell in a pre-game interview for being unprepared, Alston didn't make a basket until the 6:46 mark of the fourth quarter with his team trailing by 16 points. He finished with seven assists.

``Coming off two impressive games after injuries, I thought I picked it up where I left off but I couldn't find a flow or rhythm,'' he said.

David Wesley scored a season-high 19 for the Rockets (12-19).

A Joey Graham three-pointer with two tenths of a second left to play in the first half sent Toronto into the break leading 48-44.

With the Raptors leading 52-49 early in the third, Bosh scored six points as the Raptors took control with a 12-0 run.

MIke Bibby scored 11 of his game-high 32 points in the fourth quarter as Sacramento prevailed 118-114 Friday over the Clippers at ARCO Arena. After struggling with his shot in Tuesday's loss to Philadelphia, Bibby bounced back vs. Los Angeles, hitting 11-of-18 from the field in eclipsing 30 points for the third time in four games. Brad Miller scored 26 and Peja Stojakovic added 19 points and 13 rebounds.

Conversion is complete, AWA is now US Airways Center
After 13 years of countless memories as America West Arena, and months of conversion effort, the US Airways Center will officially open its doors at tonight’s Phoenix Suns/Miami Heat game.

From interior and exterior building signage to concession materials, advertising and promotional collateral to the Suns and Phoenix Mercury courts, guests can’t miss the new name as the US Airways Center logo is incorporated throughout the venue.

The new name of the venue was announced in November 2005 along with the finalization of a 10-year naming rights agreement, which followed the merger between America West Airlines and US Airways, completed September 27, 2005.

“Branding this venue with a new name, US Airways Center, is very fitting considering that the building has undergone a complete transformation over the past few years, providing for an enhanced entertainment experience for our guests,” said Suns Chairman and CEO Jerry Colangelo. “Our partnership with US Airways reflects a commitment to remain at the forefront of sports and entertainment venues on a national level.”

The US Airways Center recently completed a major $70 million expansion and improvement project. Gone is the block exterior, replaced with soaring glass walls. The outdoor ticket office is now enclosed inside the new 14,000 square foot Casino Arizona Pavilion, serving as a grand entrance highlighted by a 12 x 20 foot video wall. On the east side, the Bud Light Paseo is a flexible outdoor entertainment venue covered by a football field-length canopy featuring state-of-the-art sound and video projection systems, as well as the stylish Bud Light bar area and facilities that double as television studio facilities for Suns telecasts and a performance stage for music events. Other improvements include new technology installed in the bowl including a 900-foot LED ribbon, a center-hung scoreboard with HDTV screens, a new sound system, a new Courtside Club, Lexus Club and B Lounge nightclub. At street level the US Airways Center now features a Starbucks, expanded Team Shop and il Palazzetto, a Levy Brothers restaurant featuring fine Italian cuisine.

“Since its inception in 1992, America West Arena has been a great source of pride to employees our airline and now a much larger employee base can see US Airways’ commitment to the Phoenix community and the Suns organization,” said US Airways CEO Doug Parker. “As the hometown airline of Phoenix, we are excited that the US Airways Center will be both a symbol of our future and a tribute to the proud history of our airline.”

The US Airways Center is owned by the City of Phoenix and managed by a subsidiary of Suns Legacy Partners, owners of the Suns (NBA), Mercury (WNBA) and the Phoenix Roadrunners) hockey team (ECHL). The 19,000-seat, award-winning venue hosts 200 events a year including the Arizona Rattlers (AFL), concerts, the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus, Disney ice shows, other family shows, sporting events, and conventions. More than two million guests attend events at the Center annually.
